Why the U.S.—and the World—Are Urging 72-Hour Preparedness

After a string of severe storms, grid issues and rising global tensions, emergency management organizations and local governments are sounding the alarm: every household should have at least 72 hours’ worth of emergency food and supplies ready.
"Preparedness at the household level remains a critical priority," FEMA stated. "Especially with an increase in weather-driven disasters and infrastructure challenges.” (Source)

A Wake-Up Call from Recent Disasters
Just this month, tornadoes and historic flooding devastated the Southeast. Over 250,000 residents lost power. Entire communities were cut off due to washed-out roads and overwhelmed stormwater systems.
In some areas more than a foot of rain fell in just 24 hours. Leading to flash floods that trapped families in their homes and forced emergency rescues. Local officials called it one of the worst spring weather events in over a decade.
And the damage from last year still lingers. Hurricane Helene left a lasting impact across the Coast and inland states. Parts of the Carolinas and Tennessee are still rebuilding. Damaged infrastructure and homes remain — eight months later.
More Than Just the Weather
But natural disasters aren’t the only threat. Experts warn that the U.S. power grid is under growing strain from extreme weather, aging infrastructure and cyber threats. The message is clear: your family needs a backup plan.
“You don’t have to live near a fault line or in hurricane country to be affected,” said a FEMA official. “Power outages, fuel shortages, and food supply disruptions can happen anywhere.”
It’s Not Just the U.S.
Governments across Europe are also urging citizens to stock up on essentials for at least 72 hours, echoing FEMA’s message.
In France, officials released a national survival guide with advice on storing food, water, and supplies, and how to stay safe during blackouts or attacks. The goal? Build a stronger “culture of readiness.”
Belgium’s Foreign Minister, Hadja Lahbib, publicly advised families to prepare for at least three days without outside help, citing global conflict, energy risks, and supply chain issues.
Germany has also reminded citizens to be ready for emergencies, pointing to lessons from past flooding and winter outages.
Self-reliance matters more than ever.
