You may not see or hear them. But people all across the globe are trying to steal your information. From credit cards and social security numbers to frauds posing as loved ones. Everything about you is up for grabs. Here’s why cybersecurity matters now more than ever, and what you can do to protect yourself.

What Are Cybersecurity Threats?

Cybersecurity threats come from any device with access to the internet. Computers, cell phones and tablets all pose a risk. Threats usually come from hackers. These people spend their days trying to break into your accounts to steal information.

Imagine your house has a front door. If you don’t lock it, someone could sneak in and take your stuff. Cybersecurity is the lock on your technology to keep digital thieves at bay.

What Do Hackers Want from Us?

A lot more than you’d think. Hackers can have many goals, including:

  1. Stealing your information, like passwords, bank info, or Social Security numbers.
  2. Shutting down power grids or water systems, which can affect entire towns or cities.
  3. Tricking people with fake emails (called phishing) to get things like credit card numbers.
  4. Spreading viruses to slow down or crash systems – like giving computers the flu.

How Can Cyberattacks Affect Me?

  • Protecting Your Info: If someone gets into your phone or computer, they can steal your money and social security information. Some will even pose as you online.
  • Big Targets = Bigger Problems: Hackers don’t just attack people. They target hospitals, schools, and even the power grid that gives us electricity.
  • National Security: If a hacker from another country breaks into important government systems, they could disrupt emergency services or spy on our military.
  • Everyday Life: Cyberattacks can cause blackouts, shut down grocery store payment systems, or mess up traffic lights. One successful attempt can affect anyone, anywhere.

What is ‘Juice Jacking’?

Juice Jacking is a cyberattack where compromised public USB charging ports or cables are used to steal data or install malware on your phone, computer or tablet. Taking advantage of the trust users place in public charging stations.

In 2025, a café offering free charging stations became the site of a juice jacking attack. Folks trying to charge their phones gave away their bank account information and passwords. And nobody had any idea until after the fact.
