We all know what seeds are—tiny yet capable of producing large plants when properly planted and cared for.

We’re also familiar with "seeding" in sports, where higher-seeded teams have an easier path to victory.

But not everyone knows about seed paper, a unique way to grow plants while reducing waste.

What is Seed Paper?

Seed paper is handmade paper embedded with seeds. When placed in soil, the paper decomposes, allowing the seeds to sprout naturally. It provides compost without damaging the soil.

Pre-made seed paper often contains tomato, carrot, basil, mustard, and other hardy seeds. While it simplifies planting, it can limit your choice of plants.

Why Use Seed Paper?

Planting individual seeds can be tricky—some are hard to see in the soil, difficult to space properly, or require specific depths. Seed paper eliminates these challenges while offering customization if you make it yourself.

How to Make DIY Seed Paper

Making seed paper allows you to choose the seeds best suited for your garden. Here’s how:

Materials Needed:
  • Shredded paper (old newspapers, office paper)
  • Mesh screen (an old window screen works)
  • Blender or food processor
  • Large bucket or sink
  • Pressing board (plastic or wood)
  • Measuring cups, towels, rolling pin
  • Seeds of your choice
Step-by-Step Process:
  1. Soak the Paper – Place shredded paper in a bowl with warm water and let it soak overnight.
  2. Blend the Pulp – Blend the soaked paper with twice the amount of water until it forms a thick, soup-like consistency. (Optional: Add coffee grounds, eggshells, or used tea leaves for nutrients.)
  3. Mix in Seeds – Pour the pulp into a bucket or sink and stir in seeds until evenly distributed.
  4. Screening – Dip a mesh screen into the mixture, ensuring an even layer of pulp forms. Tilt the screen as needed to level it.
  5. Press & Drain – Let the screen drain for a few minutes, then press it with a board to remove excess moisture.
  6. Drying – Lay the seed paper onto towels and use a rolling pin to flatten lumps. Let it dry for at least 24 hours (or speed up the process with a hairdryer).
  7. Plant & Grow – Place the dry seed paper in your garden, cover it with about ⅛ inch of soil, and water as needed.

Once planted, your customized seed paper will sprout into delicious and nutritious food. Give it a try, and enjoy the rewards of homegrown produce!
