Double Blow to Grocery Bills

When boxers get hit with a punch, they can usually shake it off and punch back. That’s what they’re trained to do. They won’t last long if they’re knocked down by one punch.

But when boxers get slammed with a left-right combination, it can be staggering. They might even drop to the canvas. In recent days, Americans have received a one-two punch. And it’s negatively affecting our food supply.

Punch No. 1 – Drought conditions across California’s Central Valley are severely reducing crop yields. That’s where one-third of the nation’s vegetables come from. As well as two-thirds of the country’s fruits and nuts.

Punch No. 2 – West Coast freight operator labor strikes are slowing down food shipments.

And even if we stay on our wobbly feet during this barrage, there’s another haymaker right around the corner. In the form of an expected steep jump in grocery store prices by summer.

Food Prices Will Continue Increasing

Economists are warning that we should prepare for an 8 to12% jump in food prices. Within a few months.

Grocery store owners are taking this threat seriously. Some are starting to limit bulk purchases of pantry staples. Including rice, beans, and cooking oil.

Not all of our food comes from California, of course. But key imported items are also seeing major delays. Such as canned tuna, coffee, and spices. Due to shipping backlogs.

There’s a great way to counter punch against this aggressive flurry. It’s to stock up on long-lasting survival food at today’s prices. More on that in a moment.

Dust, Storms & Drought Take Their Toll

A U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) weekly weather and crop bulletin during March chimed in. It attributed drought conditions to a “ferocious dust storm.” Across the Southern High Plains.

Compounding the problem for crops were severe thunderstorms across the Midwest. Some of which resulted in tornadoes.

Unusually dry weather and a cold front affected crops in some other areas of the country. Including the East.

Meanwhile, excessively hot temperatures contributed to drought in the South. And in the Southwest.

Food Insecurity Is on the Rise

Bloomberg reports this about California’s drought conditions. They’re putting pressure on national produce availability. Which is increasing wholesale prices.

The USDA has announced that food insecurity is likely to rise. Especially in low-income and rural communities.

Food insecurity is defined by the condition of not having access to sufficient food. Or food of an adequate quality, to meet basic needs.

Feeding America supports the USDA’s opinion. The organization estimates America’s food insecure population at 44 million-plus. And growing.

Breaking Down Food Inflation

The Economic Research Service is a branch of the USDA. Here are some of its predictions for 2025:

• Overall food prices will rise faster than the historical average.

•  Beef and veal prices will increase 5.2%.

•  Egg prices will increase 57.6%.

• Prices for farm-level milk will increase by 10.9%.

•  Prices for all food will increase 3.2%.

• Prices for farm-level fruits will increase by 11.6%.

•  Prices for farm-level vegetables will increase by 6.7%.

• Food-at-home prices will increase 2.7%.

Long-Term Hardships Expected

If only drought, extreme weather events, and supply chain problems were temporary. We could deal with them.

But every prediction has them increasing in both number and severity. So in addition to current challenges, there are long-term economic hardships to consider.

Many families cannot keep up with inflation. Or they have poor access to quality food in the first place.

So, they have to sacrifice. They buy cheaper, less healthy food items. Rather than healthy, more expensive food.

Take the Punch and Fight Back

“As extreme weather becomes more common, supply chains get stretched thin by new challenges. And costs go up,” according to Yahoo! News.

Those weather changes include heat waves, droughts, and severe storms. They result in instability for the plants and animals we consume.

Farm yield losses occur. Transportation fuel cost spikes. Also playing a role are labor shortages and tariffs.

One media outlet urged Americans to be proactive in this battle. Managing finances better is job one.

Acquiring long-lasting, healthy, delicious survival food at today’s prices is another. And that’s where 4Patriots can help you not only take a punch, but also stay on your feet, get off the ropes, and fight back.
