2025 Hurricane Season Predicted as the Most Active in Decades

Meteorologists are sounding the alarm: the 2025 hurricane season is shaping up to be a big one. Leading forecasters and experts are calling for an above-average season. Citing a combination of record-warm ocean temperatures and conditions for superstorms.
According to Colorado State University’s April 2025 outlook, the season could bring:
- 23 named storms
- 11 low-category hurricanes
- 5 major hurricanes (Category 3 or higher)
The numbers jump far beyond the 30-year seasonal average.
Over that time period, we saw an average of 14 named storms, 7 hurricanes, and 3 major hurricanes (based on 1991–2020 data).
So, What’s Driving the Spike?
The two key factors behind the heightened forecast are:
- Warmer-than-average Atlantic sea surface temperatures, which provide more fuel for storm formation and intensification.
- We’re likely heading into La Niña conditions — a weather shift that lowers wind in the Atlantic. That means storms can grow stronger and last longer, making this hurricane season even more dangerous.
Experts warn that the combination of these elements creates a “perfect storm” scenario for hurricanes. That means an increased chance of power grid disruptions, flooding and severe damage across all regions.
“The numbers we’re seeing in the forecast are concerning,” said one meteorologist at CSU. “If La Niña develops and the Atlantic stays as warm as it is now, we could be looking at a very damaging season.”

Don’t Wait for the First Storm — Prepare Now
While forecasts may vary, one thing is certain: it only takes one storm to turn life upside down. That’s why experts urge families to act before hurricane season officially kicks off on June 1st.
And in a year predicted to be this severe, preparation isn’t optional, it’s essential.
Protect Your Power – Grid failures are common during storms. A reliable solar generator can keep your fridge, phones, and medical devices running when the lights go out.
Have Long-Lasting Food on Hand – Supermarket shelves empty fast. Stockpile shelf-stable meals designed to last 25 years and withstand extreme conditions.
Stay Informed and Connected – Power or cell service may be unreliable. A solar-powered emergency radio ensures you get real-time weather alerts and emergency updates.
Support Others – When you prepare early, you’re in a position to help neighbors and loved ones who may not be as ready. Be the one they can rely on.
The Atlantic hurricane season officially begins June 1st and runs through November 30th, but preparation should begin immediately.
