1 Gallon or 3? How Much Daily Water Do You Really Need in an Emergency?

The answer is three gallons per person, per day.

Not one. Three.

If you said one gallon, you're in good company. That's the number on almost every emergency checklist out there.

It's also the bare minimum.

One gallon keeps a person alive. Three gallons keeps a person living — fed, clean, and steady.

Here's how it breaks down.

Gallon 1: Drinking. At least half of this is for plain drinking water. The rest can go toward other drinks like coffee, tea, and powdered drink mixes. Thirst climbs fast when the AC is out or stress is high.

Gallon 2: Cooking and cleanup. Rice, oats, soup, freeze-dried meals. Then rinsing the pot and the plates. Dirty dishes in a crisis are how a bad week turns into a sick week.

Gallon 3: Hygiene. Washing hands. Brushing teeth. A sponge bath. Wiping down a counter. This is the gallon people forget — and the one they miss most by day two.

Bump it up for:

  • Hot weather or hard work
  • Small kids and older folks
  • Anyone sick, hurt, or pregnant
  • Pets (yes, they count)

So, how much is that really?

Say you've got a family of four. At 3 gallons per day, you need 12 gallons daily.

  • 3 days: 36 gallons
  • 2 weeks (your first big target): 168 gallons
  • 30 to 45 days (a great goal to build towards): 360 to 540 gallons

Seeing a triple-digit number can feel intimidating, but tackling it is easier than you think.

In fact, our 4Patriots University team teaches that water is actually one of the easiest boxes to check off in your preparedness plan.

You just need a simple, two-step approach:

  1. Store what you can. Aim for 2 weeks of stored water first to give your family a solid cushion. Once you hit that, slowly build up toward 30 to 45 days.
  2. Back it up with a filter. We recommend filtering all stored water before drinking. Plus, then you can filter other sources of water, too.

Do this today. It takes 30 seconds.

Grab a pen.

People in your home x 3 gallons x 14 days = Your 2-Week Goal.

Write that number down and stick it on the fridge.

You can't hit a target you've never named. Now go check off your first gallon!
