11 foods that will increase your stamina

Remember when you could run and play all day? And not even feel tired until you laid your head on the pillow that night?

For many of us, those days were a long time ago. Most of us are not nearly as physically active as we used to be.

And when we do engage in a physical activity such as hiking, mowing the lawn, shoveling snow or playing with the kids or grandkids, we feel it afterward.

In fact, sometimes we have to take a break during these activities to regain our strength. We just don’t have the stamina we used to.

Push yourself around

Now, we can do one of two things about this. We can either sit in an easy chair and say, “Hey, it’s just part of getting older. It comes with the territory.”

Or, we can take action to regain some of that stamina that used to come so naturally to us.

Assuming you have your doctor’s OK to choose the latter response, get physically active. Take brisk walks, a few minutes longer each day until you get up to 30 minutes.

Work in your yard and garden instead of paying the neighbor’s kid to do it. Swim some laps at the pool and play tennis. Work out at the gym. All of these activities and others will help you build up stamina over time.

11 natural foods for better stamina

Certain foods are better than others when it comes to helping us increase our stamina. Let’s take a look at 11 of them.

Almonds. Containing plenty of protein, Vitamin E, monosaturated fats, copper and magnesium, almonds increase your energy while curbing your appetite.

Apples. An apple a day... well, you know the rest. But it’s true. They have many health benefits, and are a source of Vitamin C and potassium. They’ll also give you a nice energy boost.

Avocados. They are rich in Vitamins B6, C, E and K, as well as potassium and magnesium. They also contain beta carotene, carbohydrates and healthy fat.

Beets. They help your digestion, improve your oxygen use and reduce inflammation. Eat them fresh in your salads.

Blueberries. Whether plain or used as a topping for pancakes, waffles, cereal or oatmeal, they help you feel energized and are good for your overall health.

Bananas. They are a great source of potassium and natural sugar. Many people add bananas to fruit salads, cereal and smoothies. A nice instant energy provider.

Dark Chocolate. High in iron, magnesium, copper, manganese and other nutrients, dark chocolate is also a strong source of antioxidants. Choose dark chocolate with 70 percent or higher cocoa content.

Oranges. Packed with Vitamin C – plus folate, potassium and thiamine – oranges are beneficial to your skin, blood pressure and energy level. Eat the entire orange rather than just drinking the juice.

Quinoa. A great substitute for rice, quinoa is a good source of protein, fatty acids, potassium, iron, zinc and magnesium. It’s nutritious and provides energy.

Spinach. Rich in nutrients while possessing few calories, spinach is a good source of iron, which helps the body make the most of its energy. Eating it fresh beats boiling it.

Sweet Potatoes. They are nutrient-dense, containing Vitamin A and potassium, and they improve digestive tract functioning. Not to mention the fact that they are delicious.
