NOAA Radios Going Offline This Storm Season

Tornado and hurricane season looms. But National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather Radios will go offline across the country in June 2025.

These are trusted and vital sources of emergency weather alerts. And they’re turning them off at the start of hurricane season.

What’s the reason for this?

The necessary 2-3 day outages are part of a scheduled update. The move, while planned, comes at a time of heightened weather risk.

In late May communities in Middle Tennessee experienced the impact firsthand. Local NOAA weather radio broadcasts went silent. And the storms raged on.

This caused concern for many residents. Including those who rely on the service for life-saving weather information.

Why Do This During Hurricane Season?

The system is central to NOAA’s ability to collect and use weather and water data. It supports meteorologists’ ability to issue warnings. All in all, it’s a core piece of infrastructure for public safety.

The system-wide update will be done in phases – hitting different areas on a rolling basis. Local offices will notify the public in advance. Alerts will be given both over the air, and through official NWS websites.

What Should I Do Now?

To stay protected while NOAA Weather Radios are offline in your area:

  1. Know Your Update Schedule - Stay informed. Check your local National Weather Service (NWS) office website for advance notice.
  2. Keep Devices Charged and Accessible - Power outages are common during severe weather. Charge your phones, solar generators and portable battery packs. If you own a solar generator, now’s the time to make sure it’s fully charged and ready to go. When the power goes out, a solar generator can help you stay connected — even when traditional sources fail. Use it to power essential devices like your phone, TV or laptop so you can still receive emergency updates and stay in touch with loved ones.
  3. Spread the Word - Share this information with neighbors, friends, and family. Especially older adults or rural residents who depend on NOAA radios.

Remember to stay informed and proactive. You can continue to receive life-saving alerts during this temporary outage. Help keep your community safe.

Tried. Tested. True.
