Survey Warns: Americans are Woefully Unprepared
9 out of 10 Americans Want to Prepare for Emergencies — But Fewer than Half Have a Plan
Despite natural disasters and weather-related blackouts happening more often, Americans are unprepared for those events, according to a new national emergency-preparedness survey.
The survey, conducted by 4Patriots in partnership with Talker Research for National Preparedness Month, polled 2,000 adults across America. The effort was prompted by a rise in weather disasters and the company’s desire to understand attitudes about preparedness.
"We wanted to learn how everyday families were coping with things like extreme heat, big storms and hurricanes. Those kinds of disasters are more frequent and more intense these days — and weather-related blackouts have grown even faster” said 4Patriots Co-Founder Erin Baler. Read more...
"It Won't Happen to Me" a Popular Sentiment
The survey found that that while 9 in 10 Americans believe that it is important to be prepared for natural disasters and blackouts, fewer than half have a preparedness plan in place.
4 out of 10 respondents have lived through a natural disaster, but more than half (53%) of respondents believe that they are less likely to be impacted by weather emergencies than other people.
Gen Z and Millennials Better Prepared than Baby Boomers
Emergencies don't discriminate by age. Yet according to the research, younger Americans seem to sense the danger of extreme weather more acutely than older Americans, as more Gen Z and millennials have a natural-disaster plan than Gen X and baby boomers.
