Donald Trump was only a few minutes into his speech at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania early Saturday evening when shots rang out.
Reaching up to his right ear and then dropping to the platform, the former president was quickly covered by Secret Service agents.
When they lifted Trump to escort him off the platform, blood was seen on his right ear, cheek, and lip.
Letting supporters know he was not seriously injured, Trump pumped his fist as security surrounded him and led him to a waiting vehicle. He was then driven to a local hospital.
1 Rally Attendee Killed, 2 Critically Injured
One rally attendee was killed during the attack and two others were critically injured.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims, their families, and Donald Trump and his family.
The FBI identified the suspected shooter as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. As of this writing, no motive has been offered for the shooting.
Trump Responds to Shooting
Following is the message announced by Trump from the hospital:
“I want to thank the United States Secret Service, and all of law enforcement, for their rapid response to the shooting that just took place in Butler, Pennsylvania.
“Most importantly, I want to extend my condolences to the family of the person at the rally who was killed, and also to the family of another person that was badly injured.
“It is incredible that such an act can take place in our country. Nothing is known at this time about the shooter, who is now dead. I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear.
“I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. Much bleeding took place, so I realized then what was happening. God bless America!”
Biden “Grateful” Trump Is Doing Well
President Joe Biden responded to the incident shortly after it occurred. Here is part of his comments:
“I have been briefed on the shooting at Donald Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania.
“I’m grateful to hear that he’s safe and doing well. I’m praying for him and his family and for all those who were at the rally, as we await further information.
“Jill and I are grateful to the Secret Service for getting him to safety. There’s no place for this kind of violence in America. We must unite as one nation to condemn it.”
