Halloween is just days away.
And while the costumes and candy bring spooky fun, there’s a real-life threat that’s anything but make-believe.
Because when the power goes out — like it’s doing more and more often these days — folks turn to gas-powered generators.
And that’s when invisible danger strikes.
You can’t see it. You can’t smell it. But it kills.
The “Silent Killer” Strikes Again
Carbon monoxide (CO) is an odorless, colorless gas. And every year, it sends more than 100,000 Americans to the ER and kills around 420 people, according to the latest CDC data.
Most victims never saw it coming.
They just wanted to keep the fridge cold… or the lights on… or the heat running during a storm. But their gas generator betrayed them. One wrong move — running it too close to the house, storing fuel nearby, or even using it in the garage — and tragedy strikes.

The answer key:
Most folks spot two. Maybe three. Here's the full list.
1. The generator in the garage. Even with the door up. Even "just for a minute." Carbon monoxide pools in a garage fast and seeps into the house. The CPSC says a gas generator belongs at least 20 feet from your home, pointed away from windows and doors.
2. Gas cans by the door. Fuel stored inside the house or garage gives off fumes. And it's one spilled can from a fire. Keep it in a shed, far from anything that gets hot.
3. The camp stove on the counter. It feels safe. It's small. But it burns fuel, so it makes CO. Camp stoves are for camping. Outside only.
4. The grill in the living room. Charcoal and propane grills put off a lot of CO. People drag them inside during an outage to cook or stay warm. Never. Not even by an open window.
5. The CO alarm with the dead battery. This is the one nobody sees. CO has no smell, no color, no sound. Your alarm is the only warning you get. Test it this week. Swap the batteries when you change your clocks.
6. The generator under the open window. Outside isn't enough. Exhaust drifts right in through a cracked window or a vent. Twenty feet away. Exhaust pointed away from the house.
Four of the six come from one thing: burning fuel near your family. There's a way to run the fridge, the CPAP, and the lights with no fuel, no fumes, and no cord to the garage. More on that below.
After Hurricane Beryl, CO Cases Surge
Hurricane Beryl in July 2024 slammed the Gulf Coast with record-breaking winds and flash floods. But even after the skies cleared, the real toll came in the days that followed.
In Texas alone, over a dozen cases of CO poisoning were reported in just 48 hours — nearly all linked to generators.
And let’s not forget Hurricane Idalia last year. While the storm surge made headlines, it was the aftermath that proved just as deadly. In Florida and Georgia, CO deaths once again took center stage in the news cycle.
Even Winter Isn’t Safe Anymore
Remember that brutal Arctic blast in early 2024?
Over 40 people died across the Midwest and Northeast. And once again, carbon monoxide was to blame in many cases. People used camp stoves indoors. They ran generators without proper ventilation. And just like that, families were poisoned while trying to stay warm.
This isn’t fear-mongering. It’s reality.
And it’s only getting worse.
